The Importance of Salt for the Body

aA Blessing and a Caution

Salt is an essential mineral for the body, playing a vital role in hydration, nerve function, and muscle contractions. It is something we often take for granted, but it has a deep significance both physically and spiritually. While salt is necessary for life, not all salts are the same, and for some people, like my husband David, certain salts can cause severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the tongue and hives. However, not all types of salt trigger these reactions in him. For me, salt is not just important; it is essential due to my condition, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).

Different Types of Salt and Their Benefits

Salt is not just table salt. There are many different types, each with unique mineral compositions that affect the body differently.

Table Salt: Heavily processed, often stripped of minerals, and contains added iodine. While it helps prevent iodine deficiency, it lacks other natural benefits.

Sea Salt: Comes from evaporated seawater and retains trace minerals like magnesium, potassium, and calcium, which benefit the body.

Himalayan Pink Salt: Rich in minerals and believed to help with hydration, balancing pH levels, and improving respiratory health.

Celtic Sea Salt: High in magnesium and has a slightly moist texture, making it excellent for electrolyte balance.

Black Salt (Kala Namak): Common in Ayurvedic medicine, it has a sulfuric taste and is believed to aid digestion.

Each salt has its own unique properties, and finding the right one for our bodies is important. For me, salt has become a necessary part of my health journey. When I was a child, doctors misdiagnosed me as anemic because they did not understand POTS. It wasn’t until my daughter was diagnosed that I realized I had been struggling with the same condition my entire life. POTS causes the body to have difficulty regulating blood pressure, making salt essential for maintaining hydration and circulation.

The Dangers of Too Much Salt

While salt is beneficial, overconsumption can lead to high blood pressure, kidney issues, and heart disease. The key is balance—understanding how much salt your body needs based on your health conditions and lifestyle.

What the Bible Says About Salt

Salt is mentioned frequently in the Bible, symbolizing purification, covenant, and preservation. YAH placed great significance on salt, using it as a metaphor for faithfulness and righteousness.

Leviticus 2:13 (HCSB) – “You are to season each of your grain offerings with salt; you must not omit from your grain offering the salt of the covenant with your God. You are to present salt with each of your offerings.”

Salt was a part of sacrificial offerings, symbolizing a lasting covenant between God and His people.

Matthew 5:13 (HCSB) – “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled on by men.”

Yeshua (Jesus) calls believers the salt of the earth, signifying our role in preserving truth and bringing flavor to the world.

Colossians 4:6 (HCSB) – “Your speech should always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person.”

Salt here represents wisdom and discernment in our words.

Salt is not just for our bodies—it has a deep spiritual meaning, showing its importance in both the physical and divine realms.

A Personal Experience with Salt

Recently, my friends from my house church gifted me a bag of their handcrafted salt. I have been using it regularly, and it has been a blessing. I even carry a small tube of it with me so I can use it whenever I need it. I cannot wait to share more information about their salt so others can experience its benefits as well.

Salt is indeed important. Just an FYI, Celtic and most Himalayan salts contain heavy metals. This is one of the main reasons we started trying to source a very pure salt. Also being low sodium you can enjoy more without the negative effects. – Jordan

Salt is a gift from YAH—both for our health and our spiritual walk. Whether it’s in our diets, our words, or our faith, we should remember its significance and use it wisely.
