How to Discover Your Calling Biblically
Have you ever felt overwhelmed trying to figure out your life’s purpose? Maybe you’re like me—a free spirit, happy to go with the flow. But let’s be real: not everyone operates that way. Some of us feel the pressure to “get it right,” to discover exactly what YAH is calling us to do. If you’ve ever wondered how to approach this biblically, you’re not alone. Let’s unpack this together.
Your Calling Begins with God
The first step in discovering your calling is understanding that it’s not about us—it’s about YAH. Ephesians 2:10 reminds us:
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
This verse shows that YAH has already designed a plan for each of us. It’s not about conjuring up a purpose but stepping into what He’s prepared. How freeing is that?
Start with What You Know
Sometimes we think our calling is a mysterious, hidden treasure we must tirelessly search for, but the Bible gives clear guidance. Micah 6:8 says:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”
Here’s the good news: walking humbly, showing kindness, and pursuing justice are starting points for any believer. No need to overcomplicate it—living out God’s general will often leads to clarity about His specific calling for you.
Seek God Through Prayer and Scripture
Jeremiah 29:11-13 is one of those verses we all love, but it’s the follow-up that’s key:
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord… You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
Finding your calling means seeking YAH with your whole heart. Are you spending time in prayer and His Word? Ask Him to reveal your next steps and be open to His timing.
Pay Attention to Your Passions and Gifts
God often gives us a glimpse of our calling through the talents and passions He’s placed in us. Romans 12:6 reminds us:
“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.”
What comes naturally to you? What brings you joy? These can be clues to your God-given purpose. And remember, no gift is too small or insignificant. Whether it’s teaching, hospitality, or simply encouraging others, it all matters.
Embrace Community Guidance
Proverbs 15:22 says:
“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.”
Sometimes, our community can see things in us that we can’t. Don’t hesitate to ask trusted friends, mentors, or spiritual leaders for insight. They may help confirm what God is already stirring in your heart.
Trust God Even in Uncertainty
Here’s the thing: discovering your calling is rarely a one-time revelation. It’s a journey. Proverbs 3:5-6 says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Even if you don’t have all the answers, trust that God is guiding you. Faith is about taking the next step, even when you can’t see the whole path.
My Journey to Discovering My Calling
I’ll be honest: being a “go with the flow” person has its perks, but it also means I’ve wrestled with clarity about my purpose. There have been times I’ve felt pressured to figure it all out, but leaning on these biblical truths has given me peace. Now, I try to focus less on the what and more on the who: Who am I serving? Who am I becoming? When I focus on aligning my heart with God’s, the rest tends to fall into place.

Danielle, This is fabulous! I too have struggled feeling like am I doing His will… because it doesn’t feel like I’m doing anything.
I just finished a study Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shirer and two of the things in the study that helped with this were:
1. Don’t be so busy looking for YAH’s will that you miss His will right in front of you.
2. If He hasn’t told you anything new then you are on the right path.

I really appreciate this! It’s something I have definitely been struggling with as my kids get older and start to leave the house. But your idea of “who” instead of “what” is such a great reminder of where my focus should be
I completely relate to the feeling of kids growing up. This past year, YAH revealed to me that the past 22 years of raising my children have been my training ground. He showed me that my first disciples are my kids, and through them, He prepared me to share His Word with others. Teaching at a co-op has made me realize how much I’ve gained from sharing Christ with my children and how I can now pass that on to my students. Over the years, my kids have taught me patience and how to be quick to listen and slow to speak—valuable lessons I’ll carry with me always.
