The words of 1 John 2:3-8 are a powerful reminder of what it means to truly know YAH. They challenge us to examine our lives in the light of obedience, love, and Christlike living. Let’s unpack these verses to understand their timeless message.
Knowing God Through Obedience
“This is how we are sure that we have come to know Him: by keeping His commands.” (1 John 2:3)
John begins with a foundational truth: true knowledge of God is demonstrated through obedience to His commands. This obedience is not a burdensome checklist but a response to His grace. It is the evidence of a transformed heart that desires to align with YAH’s will.
When we claim to know YAH but fail to follow His commands, John warns that we deceive ourselves. Such a claim without evidence of obedience reveals a disconnect between our words and our actions. True knowledge of YAH results in a life that reflects His character and values.
The Perfection of YAH’s Love
“But whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of YAH is perfected.” (1 John 2:5)
Obedience is not merely about rule-following; it is a demonstration of love. Keeping YAH’s word is how His love is perfected in us. This means His love reaches its full expression and maturity in our lives when we live in alignment with His truth.
As we obey, we grow in intimacy with YAH. His love transforms us, enabling us to reflect His light to others. This transformation is a witness to the world of what it means to live in communion with YAH.
Walking as YEshua Walked
“This is how we know we are in Him: The one who says he remains in Him should walk just as He walked.” (1 John 2:6)
To remain in Christ means to abide in Him—to stay connected and dependent on Him. This connection is not passive but active. It calls us to emulate Yeshua in every aspect of our lives.
Yeshua’ life was marked by humility, compassion, obedience, and love. To walk as He walked is to live a life that reflects His heart, values, and mission. This is both our calling and our evidence of being in Him.
The Old and New Command
“Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old command that you have had from the beginning… Yet I am writing you a new command.” (1 John 2:7-8)
John references the “old command,” which is rooted in YAH’s timeless call to love Him and others. This command is not new in essence, but it is new in the way Yeshua embodied and fulfilled it.
In Christ, this command comes alive with new depth and clarity. His sacrificial love is the ultimate standard. As we live in Him, the “darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining” (v. 8).
Living in the Light
These verses challenge us to live in the light of Christ. Knowing God is not merely an intellectual exercise or verbal declaration—it is a life of obedience, love, and imitation of Yeshua.
Let us reflect:
Are we aligning our lives with YAH’s commands?
Is His love being perfected in us through our actions?
Are we walking as Jesus walked, bringing His light into a dark world?
As we strive to live out these truths, may the love of YAH continue to transform us, and may His light shine through us for His glory.
